Major work to reconfigure Peachgrove Rd-Ruakura Rd junction

Major work to reconfigure Peachgrove Rd-Ruakura Rd junction

Work to reconfigure one of Hamilton’s busiest intersections will begin next week as construction on the Hamilton Ring Road project heads southeast.

From Monday, 10 September, work will start on the Ruakura Road-Peachgrove Road-Te Aroha Street intersection upgrade and widening.

The upgrade to the intersection will improve management of traffic using Ruakura Road for all road users. Ruakura Road is key route between central Hamilton and Waikato University.

Hamilton City Council City Development Manager Andrew Parsons says the intersection is one of the busiest in the city, and needs to be improved as part of the Ring Road project.

“There is a considerable volume of traffic through that intersection including bus services, walkers and cyclists, particularly since Ruakura Road has become a crucial route through the east of the city,” says Mr Parsons.

The work will involve some lane closures from time to time, and motorists are urged to use alternative routes through that part of the city.

Mr Parsons says this part of the Ring Road project will also see construction of a new intersection to connect Wairere Drive to Ruakura Road. Other work on Ruakura Road includes installation of street lights, bus bays, footpaths and cycle lanes.

“As with all parts of the Ring Road project, we are encouraging motorists to use other transport options – buses, cycling, or walking. Motorists can also help reduce congestion by carpooling with neighbours, friends and workmates, staggering their journey times or working from home if possible.

“We thank motorists and other road users for their patience while we complete this part of the project,” he says.

The work in the Ruakura Road-Peachgrove Road-Te Aroha Street area is expected to be completed in May.
