Auckland On Water showcases world-class marine industry

Auckland On Water showcases world-class marine industry

Auckland and the water go hand and hand. We’re surrounded by the stuff, whether it’s the Waitemata, Manukau or Kaipara harbours, or the open seas that serve as a beacon for maritime folk from here and abroad.

The water provides more than just recreational opportunities for our region, though: 60 per cent of New Zealand’s marine industry is based within a 20km radius of Auckland, with 60 per cent of our regional marine sector output exported.

The Auckland On Water Boat Show (formerly the Auckland International Boat Show) was one of 22 successful applicants in Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development’s Major Events Strategy 2012/13 baseline fund. The total baseline fund is $2.2 million and the sponsorships are allocated according to the Auckland Council-approved Major Events Strategy and its four pillars; regional return on investment, visitor nights in Auckland, how the events will enhance Auckland’s liveability, and their level of international exposure.

ATEED’s sponsorship fee for Auckland On Water is $33,000. ATEED’s economic research estimates the event could bring up to $600,000 of new money into the Auckland economy and generate up to 5000 domestic and international visitor nights during the event period.

Auckland On Water is on now at the Viaduct Events Centre and Halsey Street Wharf Extension until 30 September, and is a true showcase for New Zealand's world-renowned marine industry.

Jennah Wootten, ATEED Acting General Manager Destination, says ATEED is supporting Auckland on the Water because it is “a link to a key sector for Auckland, as well as being New Zealand’s premier boat show”.

“From a visitor’s perspective, there will be hundreds of high-class power and sail, new and used, private, charter and classic vessels on display on a specially constructed floating marina, so there’s plenty to see and do.”

More than 200 companies are exhibiting their products and services at the show, ranging from superyachts to trailer boats, engines to electronics and watercraft to chartering.

Stephen Cavanagh, ATEED Manager Sectors, says: “Auckland On Water is a good chance for us to meet a lot of companies in the marine sector, and we’ll be looking to get in front of as many companies as possible to demonstrate the support ATEED can offer companies in the marine sector, particularly around capability development, research and development support and access to niche manufacturer networks.”
