Building Activity On The Rise In Manawatū

Just released Statistics New Zealand data shows the value of residential building consents in Manawatū is on the increase.

Residential building consents valued at $25.5 million were recorded during the three months ending August, up 13% on the same period last year.

In Palmerston North, consents issued for new residential dwellings were $13.9 million, a decline of 3% from the same period last year, however, consents in the City for additions and alterations totalled $2.2 million, 17% higher than last year.

Palmerston North Mayor Jono Naylor said that the increase was a sign of recovery in building activity and a big positive for the City and the region.

“While the growth in new housing is not happening, residents are choosing to spend money on renovating their homes which is good for local economy.”

There is a marked difference in the trend for consents in the region, with total Manawatū District residential consent values of $9.4 million in the three months to August, an increase of 45% in the three months to August.

New dwelling consents in Manawatū District for the three months ended August were $8.0 million, 65% higher than the previous year, however, consents for additions and alterations of $1.4 million were 14% lower.
