Pukaha Mount Bruce Newsletter

We have an exciting announcement and thank you to make at Pukaha Mount Bruce.

Henergy Cage-Free Eggs have announced their partnership with Pukaha through their Kiwi Supporter programme. Five cents from selected packs sold carrying the logo will go towards helping to protect the kiwi and other wildlife at Pukaha.

As readers of this newsletter will already know, the 940-hectare unfenced reserve at Pukaha Mount Bruce relies on 130kms of trap lines, 1,000 bait stations and 500 traps to protect its wildlife. The Pukaha Mount Bruce Board is tasked with raising over $160,000 each year towards the forest wildlife restoration project just to maintain the current level of protection.

For many years now, Henergy, New Zealand's largest cage-free egg farm near Masterton, has provided eggs for use in traps to catch predators such as cats, stoats and rats. The traps are crucial to the war on predators and increasing birdlife. Not satisfied that they were doing enough, however, Henergy is now also donating a proportion of sales to the Pukaha Mount Bruce forest wildlife restoration project.

You can help Henergy to help us by purchasing the packs of eggs carrying the Kiwi Supporter logo.

"Henergy has always been a great supporter of Pukaha, and this is a huge step forward in our very special relationship. Pukaha is reliant on generous supporters, such as Henergy, to help us to keep the wildlife at Pukaha safe," said Bob Francis, Chair of Pukaha Mount Bruce Board.

Henergy has a natural affinity for birds and their welfare. Its hens are raised in barns rather than cages and are produced to RNZSPCA standards and carry the 'blue tick' as an endorsement that a safe and secure environment is provided. The birds have litter in which to scratch and bathe, space to flap their wings, stretch and socialise, nests in which to lay their eggs and plenty of perching space. "People ask that question, 'What came first, the chicken or the egg?' with us, the chicken always comes first," said Graeme Napier, founder of Henergy.

Trevor Friis, National Sales Manager at Henergy, said, "We believe in supporting organisations with values similar to our own - and we think that our loyal customers do too. Our customers can support Pukaha by buying the specially marked Henergy eggs at all good supermarkets."
