Volunteers needed to make a bucketload of difference

SPCA Auckland urgently needs volunteers to rattle buckets throughout the Auckland region during the Annual Paws Street Appeal from 9 to 11 November.

The organisation needs to raise $200,000 during the appeal to meet increasing demand for its services. To do so it needs about 2000 volunteer collectors.

“Last year we raised $120,000 thanks to the support of about 1100 volunteers and the generosity of Aucklanders,” says Christine Kalin, SPCA Auckland CEO. “This year we estimate we’re going to need 2000 volunteers to meet our $200,000 target.

“We know times are tough and many people can’t afford to donate money to charities like us, but people can still help out by becoming street collectors.

“You can volunteer for as little as two hours or as much as three days in an area that is convenient for you. Get your friends and family involved and make it a fun event while supporting a great cause.”

SPCA Auckland cares for animals lost, abandoned, injured, or abused in the Auckland region from Wellsford to Port Waikato. Between 1 July 2011 and 30 June 2012, SPCA Auckland cared for 18,822 animals, microchipped 3995 animals, and returned 321 stray animals to their owners.

During that same period SPCA Auckland Inspector vans travelled 380,373 km within the region investigating cases of animal neglect, abuse, abandonment, and injury. The organisation also achieved an impressive 100% success rate in bringing prosecutions against people who abused animals in their care.

“We provide an essential service for Auckland every day – but we need help. Our annual operating budget amounts to several million dollars, most of which has to be funded through donations,” says Ms Kalin.

“We would love to see as many collectors inside malls, outside grocery stores, or standing on busy street corners as possible.

“A couple of hours of your time could make a bucketload of difference to animals throughout Auckland.”
