Council Seeks Artwork Designs For New Redwoods Toilets

ROTORUA 25.10.12: Rotorua District Council (RDC) is encouraging local artists to submit artwork designs to adorn The Redwoods' new public toilets being constructed in the new year adjacent to the visitor centre.

RDC Redwoods Forest & Visitor Centre manager Julianne Wilkinson said one of the key components that will make The Redwoods toilets unique, and hopefully a talking point and attraction in their own right, will be the artwork wrapped around each toilet cubicle.

“This is an exciting opportunity to promote the talents of Kiwi artists at one of Rotorua’s most popular and spectacular natural assets - one that’s frequented every day by hundreds of people from here and overseas.

“The new stand-alone toilet design allows the creativity of an artist, carver or sculptor to be at the heart of this development.

“We’re inviting artists to present designs, plans and budgets for the creation of five “shrouds” and associated creative adornments for each of the toilet units.”

Mrs Wilkinson said interest is initially in creative works finished in wood, aluminium or steel but the judging committee is open to considering other materials or a mix of materials where artists can make a good case for it.

Artists should initially register their interest with RDC landscape architect Joby Barham by Friday 9 November by emailing him on joby.barham@rdc.govt.nz or by phone on 07 351 8133. Full concept plans will be required to be submitted for assessment by 26 November.
