Calling All Friends of the Les Batkin Reserve

29 October 2012

Calling All Friends of the Les Batkin Reserve, Waikato District Council Needs Your Help

Volunteers are being sought to assist Waikato District Council with the maintenance of the Les Batkin Reserve in Tuakau.

Water and Facilities general manager Richard Bax said the council was looking into establishing a ‘Friends of the Les Batkin Reserve’ group which would consist of volunteers keen to help with weeding, mulching, planting and general tidying of the reserve.

The reserve, which is an esplanade reserve, consists of lawns, native gardens, a mixture of native and exotic shade trees, a toilet block, playground and boat ramps.

Mr Bax said the reserve was currently maintained by contractors but required some more attention.

“Contractors mow the lawns, maintain the playground and look after some of the gardens but we could really use some help to take care of all the gardens.”

The reserve was originally developed by the former Franklin District Council with the help of local organisations.

“It would be wonderful to maintain the hard work they have already put into the gardens and develop the reserve further,” said Mr Bax.

Mr Bax said it was hoped that volunteers could take part in six working bees over the course of a year, which would help control weeds and allow for the reserve to be further developed.

“It would be great to have the community involved in helping look after a local asset. Only positive things can come from the council and the community working together on a project that recognises people’s commitment to their reserve.”

Mr Bax said other re-vegetation projects in Tuakau could also be considered in the future.
