Lower Speeds To Improve Safety On Key Porirua Roads

New speed limits signs have started going up on some key Porirua roads where speed limits have been reduced to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.

A temporary 60 km/h speed reduction on Grays Road has become permanent and Paekakariki Hill Road now has a 60 km/h speed limit from Grays Road to the boundary between Porirua City Council and Kapiti Coast District Council.

"The Council will be also be following up with some engineering changes, including new road markings, on Grays Road and Paekakariki Hill Road, so the speed environment will be consistent with new speed limits," says Roading Manager Geoff Marshall.

In 2010, traffic calming measures and a temporary traffic speed reduction to 60 km/h were implemented on Grays Road to reduce a sudden increase in accidents, some fatal. As well, safety improvement measures were implemented on both roads in 2011.

Paekakariki Hill Road is a similar road to Grays Road and there have been numerous accidents, particularly with loss of control on corners in poor weather.

Meanwhile, speed limit reductions are also in place on two other streets - Titahi Bay Road from Kahutea Terrace to Te Pene Avenue; and a small section of Raiha Street beginning 500 metres south of Prosser Street. The speed limit on these roads is now 50 km/h.

"The speed limit reduction on Raiha Street is to cater for the significant industrial development along the eastern side of Raiha Street while the extended 50km/h speed limit on Titahi Bay Road makes it safer for students as well as motorists."

The changes to the speed limits on these roads follow public consultation and agreement from the New Zealand Transport Agency.
