Manurewa Youth Council Legacy Continues
The Manurewa Youth Council is proud to
announce the names of the new appointed trustees of the
Manurewa Youth Council 2013 team. They were formally
introduced at the Manurewa Youth Council end of year event
on Saturday the 8th of December, 2012.
Special guests who
attended the event included, Angela Dalton, Chair of the
Manurewa Local Board, Daniel Newman, Deputy Chair,
Jennifer-Lee Pritchard, President of the Pacific Island Law
Students'Association at the University of Auckland and
Manurewa Local Board members, Michael Bailey and
Toa
Greening.
Simeon Brown, current Chair of the
Manurewa Youth Council who is ending his term on the
Manurewa Youth Council, introduced the 2013 team and offered
a
few words of wisdom.
"You are entering the battle of ideas, but don’t forget that you have a common vision and a common set of values which are there to direct you and to support you. There will be tough times, but the best way through this is to remember that you are a team, and that by working together, you will succeed."
The new Manurewa Youth Council appointed trustees are; Corne van Niekerk, Lydia Dhinakar, Ashleigh Fata-Colcord, Nathanael Brown, Akshaay Ananth, Meliana Ngata, Harry Risale, Jacinta Talia'uli, Michael Tau, Danielle Trebilcock, Teri Tu'uau, Matthew Ward and Benjamin Hill.
Their vision for 2013 is to engage with the young people of Manurewa, to give them a voice, raise their concerns and help create a positive difference in the community. They aim to ensure the opinions of the youth in Manurewa is heard by encouraging youth participation and engagement.
A key focus for the Manurewa Youth Council this year will be the Unitary Plan, to ensure the opinions of the youth in Manurewa is heard and included in the Plan.
The Manurewa Youth Council have achieved a great deal this year; they were actively involved with the community, targeting youth issues and effectively finding solutions to them.
"The Manurewa Youth Council is proud of
its achievemenst in its inaugural year," says Simeon Brown.
"We ran two youth forums, advocated to the Manurewa Local
Board and Auckland Council on key policy plans, and we
advocated nationally on issues relevant to young people such
as the Alcohol
Reform Bill."
"On behalf of the Manurewa Youth Council and the young people of Manurewa, I would like to thank Angela Dalton for your support throughout the year and the aspirations you have for young people in our community. This positive attitude is what our community needs," Simeon Brown concludes.
