Use the submission process urges Mayor

Coastal property owners are being urged to use the District Plan submission process to make their views known on the recently completed coastal hazards assessment.

“We have every sympathy with property owners. We understand absolutely that we are talking about their homes, which for many, are their greatest assets. We are not blind to this fact.

“However, we are bound like all other territorial authorities, by government policy and it is government policy that required us to consider the impact of climate change.

“Council is not shying away from debating the issues, but I would urge residents in affected areas to use the submission process to make their views known. The process will offer a structure where your views can be put forward and dealt with in a considered way.”

Mayor Rowan said some of the claims made in a recent newspaper advertorial were not correct and a little over the top, though understandable.

She said a letter going to coastal property owners would help explain what existing use rights the owners had now and would have under the Proposed District Plan.
