From 8pm to 12.30am on 31 December, upper Trafalgar Street will be filled with people dancing to the sounds of The Salmonella DJ Soundsystem, MOJO Funk, Oh Blok, and MC’s Big Ziggs and Mr Lazy J.
Summer Festival Director Sophie Kelly says the popular free event is tailored to locals and visitors as a family friendly way to see in the new year.
“We’ve got a super funky line up this year, with five great acts, a moving light show plus some out there street entertainment including amazing aerialists and circus performers from Fuse Circus.”
Ms Kelly reminds party goers there will be an alcohol ban in the CBD, with drinking permitted on licensed premises only.
Her team is once again working closely with Nelson Police and other services including St Johns, HYPE and private security to ensure people can enjoy themselves in a fun, friendly and safe environment.
“Services supporting the event won’t be shy in turning people away if they’re caught drinking or behaving badly. We ask that people respect the fact that this event is for the whole community to enjoy.”
New Year’s Eve line up:
The Salmonella DJ Soundsystem – Dj Rudeboy cuts up remixes and dubplates from Salmonella Dub’s entire catalogue plus a variety of contemporary dub step, dance hall and Drum ‘n Bass vinyl.
Oh Blok - winners of the Smokefree Rockquest Low Down best song award and Nelson Tasman Youth Council crowd participation award, described as dancey with a very “unique sense of musicality”.
Paper City – third place getters in the 2012 Smokefree Rockquest, playing a mixture of pop, rock and punk.
MOJO Funk – nine-piece high energy band, specialising in true funk
MC’s Big Ziggs and Mr Lazy J – veterans of the Nelson Hip Hop scene
The Trafalgar Square Countdown is presented by the Nelson City Council as a celebration for locals and an added attraction for visitors.
