Processing Fire at Synlait Milk Dunsandel Plant

MEDIA STATEMENT
17 December 2012

Processing Fire at Synlait Milk Dunsandel Plant

Canterbury milk nutrition company Synlait Milk had a processing fire at its Dunsandel plant at 6:45am on Saturday 15 December 2012.

The fire was contained within a small section of its number one spray drier, and was caused by a faulty valve directing too much hot air to that part of the plant.

Staff followed correct procedure and quickly and safely bought the situation under control before alerting fire services.

Minor damage was suffered and the affected spray drier is now fully operational after 48 hours of remedial work.

The company’s infant nutritional and Anhydrous Milk Fat facilities were not affected and remained fully operational.

Milk collection continued and was managed to ensure minimal disruption to farm operations.

There were no injuries during the event.
