Positive discussions on Coastlands Aquatic Centre Project

There are “very positive signs” that significant work on the Coastlands Aquatic Centre would resume in the next two or three days.

Work on the Paraparaumu site stalled last Wednesday when the contractor Mainzeal Property and Construction went into receivership.

Kapiti Coast District Council Chief Executive Pat Dougherty, Deputy CE Tamsin Evans and Council’s legal team met with the receivers PricewaterhouseCoopers in Wellington this afternoon.

Mr Dougherty came away from the meeting saying “we expect work on the project will resume shortly. We are confident the project will be completed.

“The receivers wanted an assurance from Council that we would pay for the work undertaken since February 6 and on that basis, they would enter into discussions directly with the sub contractors with the aim of getting them back on site.

“We gave them that assurance tonight.”

Mr Dougherty said there was a significant amount of goodwill from all sectors. “There has been a clear willingness from all parties to see this project completed. I’m happy to say that that goodwill is continuing.”

Some work on the site had continued over the past several days, principally around the installation of the pool lining and moveable floor.

“I’m hopeful we will see the rest of the sub contractors moving back on to the site once talks between PricewaterhouseCoopers and the sub contractors are completed.”

Mr Dougherty said he was not in a position to go into further details. Councillors were briefed on developments late today.
