Lower Waitaki Zone Committee meeting

The Lower Waitaki – South Coastal Canterbury Zone Committee will meet for its first monthly public meeting of the year on Wednesday, 20 February, in Waimate.

The committee will begin the meeting with an update from the Regional Committee before going on to consider and discuss its priorities for the coming year.

Now the committee’s Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management has been finalised and endorsed by councils, the focus for the committee is on the on-the-ground implementation activities, and particularly, sub-regional planning processes for the zone.

The sub-regional chapter will supersede the default water quantity and water quality limits in Environment Canterbury’s Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP) for South Coastal Canterbury.

The committee will be working towards developing agreed outcomes for limits that the community is trying to achieve, based on the CWMS targets. Once draft outcomes are agreed by the zone committee the wider community will be engaged with, as part of initial community discussions around the sub-regional process.

At the meeting the committee will also work through the report on the proposed changes to the Waitaki Catchment Water Allocation Regional Plan. The changes are intended to address allocation issues in the Lower Waitaki River.

The committee will finish the meeting by discussing the process and timing for appointment of community members as each committee’s three year tenure comes to an end.

Environment Canterbury, the relevant Territorial Authority, and Ngai Tahu will make recommendations to the Canterbury Mayoral Forum on how the committees should be structured, after feedback has been sought from zone committee members.

The Lower Waitaki - South Coastal Canterbury Zone Committee operates as a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and the Waimate and Waitaki District Councils. The zone extends from the Otaio catchment in the north, to the Waitaki Dam in the south, taking in Waimate, Kurow and Duntroon.
