Black Bridge Closes For Repairs
From Tuesday 2 April 2013 the Black Bridge will be closed for repair work.
The Black Bridge is situated at the end of Kahuterawa Road and is used mainly by trampers and mountain bikers to access the Back Track and bike trails in Arapuke Forest Park.
“The bridge will be closed for at least two weeks so that urgent repairs can be made to the deck of the bridge,” Brian Way Palmerston North City Council leisure assets officer said. “The bridge was built in 1964 so after nearly 50 years of reliable service it is well and truly due for a make-over.”
“Anyone wanting to cross the Kahuterawa Stream will need to wade across the stream and a short way up Butlers Creek before climbing out onto Back Track. Most people using the area won’t mind doing this, but it will mean that they need to be aware of the river levels.”
People out walking who don’t want wet feet can still use the Sledge Track which requires no stream crossings.
