Matiu/Somes Reopened for Full Visitation

From Tuesday 26th March Matiu/Somes Island is fully open to the public again, until further notice. While the fire risk is still high, the recent rain, the dropping air temperatures and an increase in morning dew has allowed the island to reopen.

Day and overnight visitors have been very good at conserving water and the water bore that draws from the Hutt aquifer has started to supply fresh water to the island again.

Although the island is reopening, a complete fire ban still exists on the island and the mainland. Conservation of water is still a high priority for the whole region and the ban on outside watering remains.

DOC staff are keeping a close eye on the fire risk and the water supply and are hopeful Matiu/Somes will remain open during the dry spell.
