Council regrets sports grounds not ready for weekend

Christchurch City Council regrets it is unable to have the majority of
winter sports fields marked in time for the start of the winter sports
season on Saturday (6 April 2013).

The Council is responsible for marking public sports grounds ahead of
the winter season. The bringing-forward of the junior and intermediate
season start-dates has made this more difficult this year.

Council's General Manager, City Environment Group Jane Parfitt says
contractors have been asked to pull out all the stops to have as many
fields marked ahead of the weekend, however the majority will still be
unavailable.

"I apologise to those affected by the mistake. We were over-ambitious in
believing we could have the fields marked in time for the earlier
opening and we should not have committed to this. I understand that many
families will be disappointed and can only apologise once again.

"We are working closely with contractors now and extra staff has been
brought in to speed up the process. We will make a list of affected
sports ground available tomorrow on our website."
