Power outage in Cambridge – Update 3

A power outage affecting the Cambridge area continues following an explosion at Transpower’s Cambridge substation around 12am this morning, which caused substantial damage to its 11 kV indoor switchgear.

Transpower crews have made good progress on repairs and are starting to undertake commissioning tests on the equipment.

If no further damage is found, the earliest power would be restored on the Transpower network is around 1pm. Note, however, that following Transpower restoration, Waipa Networks, the local lines company will need up to one further hour to gradually restore its network and power to customers.

Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
