Banks Peninsula Zone Committee Focuses On Zip Feedback
The Canterbury Water Banks Peninsula Zone Committee will meet for its regular monthly public meeting on Tuesday, 23 April, in Governors Bay.
The committee will begin the meeting by offering members of the public a chance to contribute to the meeting, should they wish.
Following this, the committee will receive an update from the Regional Committee, which considers regional issues of environmental restoration and repair; land use impacts on water quality; as well as water storage, distribution and efficiency options.
The key focus for Tuesday’s meeting will be on working with Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury on implementing the key recommendations in its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP).
The Banks Peninsula ZIP was received by Environment Canterbury last month as the basis for the design and realignment of council work programmes for freshwater. It will go to Christchurch City Council on 24 April.
Its water management recommendations were developed collaboratively with the community to enable present and future generations the greatest environmental, cultural, social and economic benefits from the region’s water.
The ZIP includes ten chapters, each focussing on a different priority area for water management.
The ten
chapters are:
• Water quality
• Lake
Wairewa
• Water
quantity
• Wastewater
• Biodiversity
• Climate
change and flooding
• Kaitiakitanga
• Education
and communication
• Erosion and sediment
control
• Coastal
Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury will be the lead agencies in many of the recommendations in the ZIP, and at the meeting representatives from each council will outline how they will go about implementing the priority on-the-ground actions.
At the meeting the committee will also receive a presentation on minimum flows and permitted use of water in the zone from Environment Canterbury. The presentation will use French Farm Stream as an example to illustrate how low flows, consents, and plans work with respect to consented and nonconsented water abstractions.
The Banks Peninsula Zone Committee typically meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Zone Committee meetings are open to the public.
