Gardening Give-and-take For Elizabeth’s Sake
A slice of Tupare is to be revamped, with the public invited to join in – to learn as well as to help.
The first of a series of three free public workshops on Sunday (5 May) will focus on a new design for an area of Elizabeth Garden, which was among Sir Russell Matthew’s first developments on the New Plymouth property in the 1930s and 1940s.
Subsequent workshops will cover preparation (9 June) and installation (14 July).
“Participants will gain ideas and skills for tackling those tricky areas in their gardens at home,” says the Taranaki Regional Council’s Regional Gardens Manager, Greg Rine.
“Because of its small size and intimate feel, and its location near the Chapman-Taylor home at Tupare, Elizabeth Garden presents some design challenges – similar to the type of challenge many people face in their home gardens.”
He says public participation will allow the Tupare team to gain valuable feedback as the project unfolds.
Elizabeth Garden is named after Sir Russell Matthew’s daughter and is among a number of features throughout the 3.6ha landscaped property bearing the names of family members.
Tupare, along with Pukeiti and Hollard Gardens, is now owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council on behalf of the people of the region. All three are open daily and entry is free.
Sunday’s workshop runs from 2pm to 4pm at Tupare, 487 Mangorei Rd, New Plymouth. It is part of a year-round programme of free events at the Council’s heritage properties.
