Horizons on the hunt for new GoCard design

Creativity could be just the ticket for high school students in Wanganui as Horizons Regional Council seeks a new design for its popular pre-paid travel card, known as the GoCard.

GoCard entitles users to cheaper bus fares on city buses while saving passengers the hassle of having the correct change. From Monday May 6, students are encouraged to submit their vision for a new GoCard, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs.

Horizons transport planner Wayne Wallace is a member of the GoCard judging panel and says judges will be looking for designs that reflect the spirit of Wanganui.

“We know there are some talented young people out there and we want to see designs that reflect all the things that make Wanganui a great place to be.

“The buses are a part of day-to-day life in Wanganui and at the moment the GoCard design is pretty generic. Judges will be looking for something with a bit of vibrancy and we’re encouraging young people to grasp this opportunity to make their mark,” Mr Wallace says.

Students can enter more than one design and entry forms are available from schools, Horizons’ office in Guyton Street or online via Horizons’ website www.horizons.govt Copies of the entry form will also be available at Wanganui District Council facilities such as the i-Site and library.

Entries close 5pm Monday May 27 and Mr Wallace will be joined on the judging panel by a member of Wanganui’s Youth Committee, Horizons Regional Council chairman Bruce Gordon and UCOL coordinator for Certificate in Art and Design, Leigh Anderton.

Once all entries are in, the panel will select their top four designs. These designs will be applied to the front of GoCards which will be up for sale, allowing the community to purchase their favourite design.

The design that sells the most over a four-week period will be declared the People’s Choice winner and take out the main prize which includes a Kindle WiFi eReader sponsored by Tranzit.

More information about buses in Wanganui and the GoCard competition is available online at www.horizons.govt.nz under the passenger transport section.
