Council presence at careers expo

ROTORUA 08.05.13: Rotorua District Council (RDC) is supporting Rotorua’s Careers Expo at Energy Events Centre over the next two days (9 – 10 May) by creating a showcase of career opportunities available within some of Rotorua’s largest employers.

Red Stagg Timber, Scion, Rotorua Lakes District Health Board (Dental unit) and Te Maioha will be joining RDC in promoting various positions, roles and departments, as well as any current vacancies. The business area will also be profiling the district’s key economic sectors of forestry, tourism, agriculture and geothermal.

RDC business marketing manager Renee Nathan said it is important that local young people understand what opportunities are available and the skills required.

“As young people enter the Energy Events Centre, participants will walk through the business area and have the chance to talk directly to staff prior to visiting the various education providers.

“We believe this will be a great way for people to gain a better understanding about an organisation and the diversity of options that can be explored. It will be the first time this approach has been done and we’re confident that it will be well received.

“The council will also run a perception survey for youth to complete during the expo. This survey will help us find out what young people are looking to find, what information they require, and how best to communicate to them.”

During the expo, panel discussions of RDC staff from various departments will be talking about what they do, how they got their position, as well as answering questions from the floor.

“This will also be an excellent chance for attendees to engage and find out what exciting careers are available within council. As one of the top five largest employers in the district, it is vital that we are promoting to our young people to consider working for RDC,” said Mrs Nathan.

“It is important that businesses play a role at careers expos and we’re encouraging youth, parents and anyone else interested to come along.”
