Winter Driving
Winter Driving - Media Advisory Wednesday 8 May 2013
Ice on the Crown Range Road and other parts of the Wakatipu Basin this morning has signalled the official start to winter driving conditions in the Queenstown Lakes District.
“We have had reports that the Queenstown side of the Crown Range was icy this morning as was the approach to several bridges in the Wakatipu Basin,” Queenstown Lakes District Council transport manager Denis Mander said.
Contractors applied grit on the Crown Range this morning.
“When we are on the cusp of winter conditions it does mean that drivers should adopt a cautious approach when temperatures are sub-zero,” Mr Mander said. It was a good reminder to all residents in the Lakes District to ensure they had chains and knew how to fit them or to arrange an alternative means of transport on snow and ice days.
“We live in an alpine resort, when it snows it’s great news for skiers and snowboarders and our business community but there will be days when chains may be essential,” he said.
Other winter tips included: ensure vehicles had adequate anti-freeze, carry extra clothing or blankets, keep some food and drink in the car, increase following distances, change gear and brake smoothly and avoid braking on shady areas.
“Council will commence its early morning snow reports from 20 May, which will be featured on local radio and posted to the QLDC website, Twitter and Facebook each morning,” Mr Mander said.
