Get Ready For the Great Motat Steam Fair
As the autumn temperatures start to
drop, MOTAT is set to heat up Auckland with its inaugural
Great MOTAT Steam Fair on Sunday 26 May.
Set amongst MOTAT’s spectacular steam collection, The Great MOTAT Steam Fair will showcase steam power of the yesteryear in a unique, fun and engaging country fair-styled experience for the whole family.
MOTAT Museum Director, Michael Frawley, says The Great MOTAT Steam Fair will give visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of steam power in New Zealand in its multi-faceted forms with a series of hands-on activities and fascinating displays.
“Families will love climbing aboard MOTAT’s beautifully restored steam trains and steam powered traction engines, giving visitors rides throughout the day,” says Mr Frawley.
The event will also feature coal shovelling , encouraging children to put their teamwork skills to use, and kids will be able to get crafty as they make their very own goggles and ‘steam punk’ top hats to take home.
“There will be a costume parade on the day, where Steampunkers, cos-players, social history aficionados and theatre-lovers will be able to show off their Victorian science-fiction outfits in a procession through MOTAT’s Historic Village. Spot prizes will be awarded throughout the day for costume originality and creativity, so we encourage everyone to come along dressed to impress!” says Mr Frawley.
Visitors will have access to MOTAT’s beautifully restored Pumphouse and beam engine, authentic steam locomotives, engines and rollers, and a team of passionate volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions.
The Great MOTAT Steam Fair will be a celebration of all things steam for all ages, so come along and discover the magic of steam power at MOTAT!
