Community workshops planned for Main Road Master Plan
Christchurch City Council will hold community workshops as part of their Suburban Centres Programme for the recovery and rebuild of the Main Road corridor.
In response to earthquake damage, a master plan is being developed for the Main Road corridor, with input from community leaders, building and business owners, government agencies, other stakeholders and interest groups and local residents.
City Planning Unit Manager Brigitte de Ronde says master planning for the Main Road corridor between Ferrymead Bridge and Marriner Street, Sumner will complement the Draft Master Plan already underway for Ferry Road.
“Together, both master plans will form a comprehensive recovery approach to the Ferry Road / Main Road corridor from the city to the sea – not only in response to the damage caused in the earthquakes, but to also consider ways to build economic and social resilience into the future.
“Main Road master planning takes in the two commercial centres along its route – McCormacks Bay / Soleares Avenue and Redcliffs – and will present goals, actions and a future vision for the recovery of theses centres and the corridor itself,” she says.
Mayor Bob Parker says this is the final master planning project in the Council’s Suburban Centres Programme.
“Since its inception in June 2011, eight master plans are now either in the development or implementation stages and case managers have been working in earthquake-affected suburban centres across the city.
“Local communities have truly embraced the master planning process and worked alongside the Council to develop eight community-focused recovery plans. Thousands of Christchurch citizens have been involved and I am immensely proud of the work that has been produced. The significance of this has been acknowledged through the inclusion of funding for master plan projects in the Christchurch City Three Year Plan.
“I am sure the communities along Main Road will be no exception – I look forward to their input into the master plan that will be developed for their area,” he says.
