Up Close and Personal with At-risk Plants
Taranaki’s rare and endangered plants will come under the spotlight at a free public workshop at Hollard Gardens, Kaponga, on Sunday (26 May).
Led by Taranaki Regional Council and Department of Conservation staff, the workshop will look at some of the region’s threatened plants, why they are in danger, and what the public can do to ensure their future survival.
The workshop will include a guided walk around Hollard Gardens’ extensive plant collection, focusing on species that are rare and endangered.
“We’ll look at the reasons why some of the region’s plants are now at risk,” says the Council’s Regional Gardens Manager, Greg Rine. “But it’s not all negative – we’ll also explain some of the initiatives being taken to save these plants, and how the community can assist.
The free two-hour workshop will begin at 2pm on Sunday 26 April. It is part of a year-round programme of free workshops and other events at Hollard Gardens, Pukeiti and Tupare, the three heritage properties owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council on behalf of the people of the region.
