Community, Recreation and Culture Committee 4/6/13

Tuesday 4 June 2013

Community, Recreation and Culture Committee key decisions

Christchurch City Council’s Community, Recreation and Culture Committee met today.

The following key decisions were made:

• The Committee asked staff to identify a list of closed Council buildings that could be presented to Council for a decision to exempt them from the current policy and potentially re-open if they have been assessed as having a seismic capacity of less than 34 per cent of the New Building Standard (NBS) but are not dangerous to occupy. The existing Council policy is to close all non-residential buildings that are assessed as below 34 per cent of the NBS.

• The Committee recommended the Council should adopt the Council’s new Communications Policy (page 87). A working party was set up to review a draft Communications Policy developed in 2009 that was never formally adopted by the Council. The working party made a number of changes aimed at making the original document shorter, more concise and to reflect the current environment. Once adopted, the policy will be published online.

• The Committee recommended to Council that it should proceed to tender for 25 new social housing units at HP Smith Courts in Richmond, Berwick Courts in St Albans and Harman Courts in Addington.

• Councillors approved a Heritage Incentive Grant of up to $68,726 for conservation and maintenance work for the Group 2 heritage building at 30 New Regent Street, subject to certification of compliance. The two-storey unit is towards the north-eastern end of New Regent Street. The works include structural strengthening, repainting of the building’s exterior, replica tiling to the shopfront, replacement of rimu flooring and full electrical refurbishment.
