Christchurch paints it All Black

Christchurch is painting it All Black over the coming days, as excitement builds towards the All Blacks’ Steinlager Series Test against France on Saturday 15 June.

The city will be facing a “black-out”, with the Paint it All Black schools competition – run by the Christchurch City Council with support from the Canterbury Rugby Union, New Zealand Rugby, 91ZM and Classic Hits – encouraging students to decorate their classrooms in the national colour.

“It’s a fun and visual way of showing our rugby heroes how much backing they have,” Mayor Bob Parker says. “It’s entirely up to students how creative they get. We’ve had some smashing entries in past years – some classrooms have been coated in wall-to-wall black – and it’s always contributed to a real atmosphere of anticipation in the city.”

The All Blacks themselves will behold the most spectacular entry, with the winning classroom treated to a visit from some of their All Blacks heroes on Friday 14 June. They will also receive vouchers for sporting equipment and electronics for their school courtesy of New Zealand Rugby.

Rugby clubs also have a key part to play in generating excitement in the build-up to the game. Rugby clubs have been invited to enter their Player of the Day into the Paint it All Black Player of the Day competition. Prizes include tickets to the New Zealand vs. France Test and vouchers for sporting equipment for the winners’ club. This competition is open to all age grades from Rippa through to seniors.
