Student designs impress judging panel
Judging for Horizons Regional Council’s competition to find a new GoCard design for Wanganui buses took place this week, with four finalists emerging from the rest.
Tiana Oldale, Amy Chapman, and Poppy Mitchell-Anyon (all aged 16) and Hannah Symonds (aged 18) were selected by judges from 24 entries for the high level of thought and creativity evident in their designs.
The overall winner will be decided by the community as the designs are made into stickers, which can be applied to new and existing GoCards from next month.
“The quality of entries made for a few tough decisions around the judging table but the four finalists selected are all very deserving and we’re really looking forward to seeing which design comes out on top,” Horizons transport planner and member of the judging panel Wayne Wallace said.
“We were looking for vibrant designs that were reflective of life in Wanganui and we’ve definitely seen that coming through.”
Mr Wallace was joined on the panel by Horizons chairman Bruce Gordon, Wanganui Youth Committee member Olivia Wood-Bodley and UCOL coordinator for the Certificate in Art and Design Leigh Anderton.
Ms Anderton says she was also very impressed by the calibre of entries received and believes there may be a few budding designers amongst finalists selected.
“It was evident that submitters had spent a lot of time thinking about their designs. The finalists’ designs are well balanced, they include prominent Wanganui landmarks and demonstrate a strong sense of colour,” she said.
Fellow panel member and youth committee member Olivia Wood-Bodley added that “students showed a really clever use of symbolism to make the designs look creative”.
“It’s great to see designs come through that really reflect the city and really cool to have younger people involved in the design process.”
Newly designed GoCards will be available to purchase from the start of July, with other voting options available to those who already have a GoCard.
After a one month period, the most popular design will be declared the people’s choice winner and become the face of Horizons’ Wanganui GoCard. The winner will receive a Kindle WiFi eReader sponsored by Tranzit, with smaller prizes awarded to other finalists.
