College places third in International Competition

News Release: Monday 17 June, 2013

College places third in International Competition

The Sweet Margaritas, Queen Margaret College’s Barbershop Chorus, pulled off an exciting third place in the inaugural Young Women in Harmony Chorus Competition, run by the women’s barbershop parent organisation Sweet Adelines, and open to entries from around the world.

This was the first competition of its kind in womens’ barbershop history. It involved Barbershop choruses for young women under 25 years submitting DVD entries of performances. Choruses from the USA took out the two top places but New Zealand groups came in third, fourth and fifth, showing the strength of this art form in our Nation.

Director Tim Jenkin says: “the girls worked with discipline and passion to prepare for their performance and pulled out all the stops on the day. I am extremely proud of their achievements, and especially that they are performing at an international level.”

The Sweet Margaritas have a reputation in the New Zealand Barbershop community, perform regularly in Wellington, and have in recent years taken out first, second and third placing in our own National competition. This September they will compete again in the finals in Hamilton.

Principal, Carol Craymer, “due to technological advances, competing on an international level has become easier for students in New Zealand. These opportunities allow students to not only compare their talents with those of students in other countries but also but become more globally connected and aware.

With a QMC student winning the Language Perfect World Championship, this is the second time in recent times that we have celebrated international success at the College and we look forward to other international competitions that are bound to arise in the future.”
