Christchurch Weather and road update: 9:54am

9.30am, Friday 21 June 2013

Weather and road update

Latest forecasts advise snow is expected to ease off this morning, turning to showers and hail this afternoon. Further snow is possible overnight and tomorrow morning.

Heavy rain is still expected over the next 24 hours making driving conditions dangerous.

Surface flooding is an issue in low-lying areas across the city and drivers are asked to take care. Please slow down when driving through flooded areas - the wake your vehicle creates can send waves into neighbouring homes and businesses.

Earthquake-damaged wastewater systems remain fragile in parts of the city and have been blocked by rain - it's possible flooded roads and parks may be contaminated, so avoid the water where possible or make sure you wash your hands and remove and wash any clothing that gets wet.

Hill roads are currently extremely dangerous for motorists and should be avoided until later this afternoon.

Some Christchurch bus services have been affected:
* 17 Bryndwr / Huntsbury - will end its trips early at the intersection of Centaurus Road and Wilsons Road
* 114 Barrington / Cashmere - will end its trips early and go no further than Princess Margaret Hospital

Please check www.metroinfo.co.nz for latest information.

Police are asking road users to:
* Exercise extreme caution on the roads as weather conditions deteriorate
* High winds, heavy rain and snow in hill areas will make conditions treacherous
* Localised flooding and forecast strong gusty southerly winds will also pose hazards for drivers
* Assess local conditions and consider delaying non-essential travel
* Drive to the conditions, slow down and extend following distances

The weather will remain wet and cold over the weekend. People are asked to check in on older people or those with disabilities who live alone in their neighbourhoods. If we lose power or heating, make a plan to stay with friends or family who have heating. Wear extra layers of warm clothes (such as wool or polypropylene) and eat warm food.
