Public’s chance to influence variable speed limits and speed reductions
Palmerston North City Council’s revised proposal for the Speed Limit Bylaw will go out for public consultation on Monday.
Head of strategy and policy, Neil Miller, says the revised proposal has already received a lot of media and social media commentary as it has progressed through various stages within Council.
“The aim of the Bylaw is to improve safety of everyone on the road while minimising disruption to motorists. Many cities across New Zealand have either had or are having debates and variable speed limits have been successfully introduced.”
Neil Miller says it’s important to note that traffic speeds on many of the streets in the central city are already around the proposed 30 k/h limit. “So, in effect this Bylaw will confirm that and provide reassurance to pedestrians and cyclists.”
The revised proposal is for:
• Variable 40 km/h speed limits outside schools which would apply when children are arriving or leaving school and will be considered for all city schools, unless they are located on a State Highway – which are managed by NZTA.
• Permanent reduction to 30km per hour on most streets within the City centre.
• Permanent speed reductions on a number of
roads within the city including the boundary change areas of
Longburn and Bunnythorpe. The proposal includes details on
roads within the City boundary that are considered suitable
for a reduction in speed limits. These include:

o Part of Tutaki Rd

Public consultation starts on Monday, 24 June and ends on 25 July 2013 with public submissions heard on 14 August.
