Careful driving advised
throughout cold snap
Christchurch City
Council is advising all motorists to be extra careful this
week with the cold weather expected to make driving
conditions difficult.
The current cold weather conditions and heavy rainfall can make the already earthquake-damaged roads more susceptible to damage, making pot holes more likely. We're continuing to carry out maintenance and filling pot holes until permanent repairs are made by SCIRT.
Christchurch City Council Transport and Greenspace Unit Manager John Mackie says, “The forecast is good for the rest of the week, but we'll still need to be keeping a close eye on the roads. We are reminding road users today that ground conditions remain saturated, so the roads will be prone to pot holes and cracking.
“Freezing overnight temperatures forecast all week will also create icy conditions on wet roads so we strongly advise careful driving. We have contractors out across the city repairing pot holes and cracking to ensure the roads are safe for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.”
Council staff and contractors continue to monitor the conditions, with Civil Defence and all emergency agencies on stand-by if required.
