Input Needed On Liquor Licensing
The Queenstown Lakes District Council is asking the community for its input as work begins on changing the way liquor licensing is handled in the district.
Following the introduction of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, Council is seeking expressions of interest from the community regarding the establishment of a new District Licensing Committee.
The committee will take the central role regarding all Liquor Licensing applications in the district, including considering and determining applications for licences and managers certificates, temporary authorities and special licenses.
Mayor Vanessa van Uden said while there were specific competencies required for the Chair and members of the committee, she was certain there would be a lot of interest in the roles.
“We’re looking for pragmatic decision makers with a knowledge of alcohol licensing, an understanding of community expectations and strong communication skills,” she said.
“We have a wealth of talented and experienced people in this district who would be able to bring a lot of skill and experience to the table. We’re looking forward to hearing from them,”
Council would also be seeking to consult the wider community on the issues relating to alcohol as it begins the process of developing a Local Alcohol Policy. In coming weeks, consultation with stakeholders on alcohol in the community will be undertaken. This feedback will then be used to develop a draft policy and public consultation will take place.
Mayor van Uden said Council was keen to hear as wide a range of views as possible during the public consultation process.
“We want to find out how the whole community feels about alcohol and the way it’s managed in our community,” she said.
“Often people with moderate views stand back from the consultation process but we feel it’s important for them to voice their position and make sure it’s included.”
“All views are relevant and valuable to the process,” she said.
