First Arts Centre Building Restoration Complete – Open Day Sunday, 7 July
The first fully restored building at the Arts Centre – the Registry – is now complete.
Members of the public are invited to attend the Registry open day on Sunday, 7 July from 1-3pm.
Located on the corner of Montreal Street and Worcester Boulevard, the Registry building was built in 1916, with an extension added in 1926. The building underwent strengthening and a major refurbishment in 2004, but was damaged and subsequently closed following the Canterbury earthquakes.
The rebuild process has thoroughly strengthened and restored the Registry, while adding modern services to improve access and use of the building.
Arts Centre chief executive André Lovatt says completion of the building is a significant milestone.
“This is of the culmination of the hard work of a large team of people: Arts Centre staff, consultants, contractors and supporters. It also demonstrates the high quality, and level, of care in our approach to all buildings on site.
“The open day is an opportunity to walk through the building and experience firsthand a tangible part of our vision for the future of the Arts Centre.
“We invite locals and visitors alike to share our excitement and achievement.”
