Youth call for investment in Congestion Free Network

Youth call for investment in Congestion Free Network

Youth climate organisation Generation Zero, along with Auckland Transport Blog, are calling for a commitment from Auckland’s leaders to invest, over the next 17 years, in the Congestion Free Network in order to provide Auckland with an alternative transport strategy to the Integrated Transport Programme.

Spokesperson for Generation Zero, Dr Sudhvir Singh explains “A network free of congestion is a high frequency public transport service of rail, buses and ferries on dedicated infrastructure separated from roads, with a ‘turn-up-and-go’ rate of at least every ten minutes or better.”

The staging of key public transport infrastructure projects for the Congestion Free Network is shown in 4 maps in 2015, 2020, 2025 and 2030.

Dr Singh; “The maps give a clear indication of how Auckland over the next 17 years can achieve the Congestion Free Network in 2030 by investing in strategic public transport infrastructure, leading to a liveable low carbon city.”

The Congestion Free Network is an alternative to the Integrated Transport Programme, which is Auckland Council’s current transport strategy. Emissions from transport account for greater than half of Auckland’s carbon pollution.

Singh; “Auckland’s Mayor, Len Brown, should reconsider Auckland’s current transport strategy; The Integrated Transport Programme, which is dominated by spending on motorways, as this will only increase carbon pollution and will result in poorer health and economic outcomes for Aucklanders.”

The choice is between the Congestion Free Network and the Integrated Transport Programme.

Singh: ”The Congestion Free Network will provide Aucklanders with an alternative choice to the city’s gridlocked motorways at a fraction of the price of the $60 billion Integrated Transport Programme, as well as delivering significant reductions in carbon pollution. This will move Auckland towards being the most liveable city in the world.”
