Scarborough Paddling Pool demolition to begin
The demolition of the earthquake-damaged Scarborough Paddling Pool will begin this week while investigations into the future of the site continue.
The paddling pool on Scarborough Esplanade has been closed to the public since it was damaged in the 22 February 2011 earthquake. The Council agreed in March this year to demolish the paddling pool, which is damaged beyond repair, and return the area to grassed lawn while the long term future of the site is considered.
Fencing that has been around the site will remain in place while the demolition, which is expected to take about three weeks, is carried out. After the pool is demolished, the area will be grassed over and the fences removed.
Council staff are currently looking at options for the future of the site. Options are being discussed with the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board before a recommendation is made to the Council’s Community, Recreation and Culture Committee for consideration.
Acting Unit Manager Recreation and Sport David Bailey says this is a sad time for the community.
“Although many Sumner residents have fond memories of summers spent at this paddling pool, we need to make the area safe. We are aware of the significance of the paddling pool to Sumner residents and we look forward to continuing to work with the community to find a way forward. ”
The paddling pool is one of the Council’s top 30 projects that in September 2012, were prioritised for funding, further investigations and, where possible, repair as part of its Facilities Rebuild Plan Programme.
The Council has already repaired and re-opened the Botanic Gardens Paddling Pool and the New Brighton Whale Pool, which are also among its top 30 projects.
