No Tolls or Taxes to Fund Transport Needs
No Tolls or Taxes to Fund Transport Needs
Affordable Auckland Waitemata & Gulf candidate Stephen Berry says Aucklanders should not be squeezed one more cent to fund Auckland’s transport needs. “No rates increases, no congestions charges, no regional fuel tax and no tolls on existing roads!”
“I advocate two approaches that have been given little to no mention in the media, yet they would not require the raising of any taxes or levies. First of all, Auckland Council should look at selling some of its assets to cover the shortfall. Currently valued at over $30 billion, they would fund the lot and retired property owners on fixed incomes won’t have to choose between paying rates and turning on their heaters at winter.”
“The other alternative I propose is for the Government to change the law allowing private companies to fully invest in the building of private roads and then charging tolls to pay for them. This option is best of all because it means absolutely zero risk for the ratepayer, no increase in rates or taxes and nobody would have to pay a cent if they elected not to use the road.”
Mr. Berry says that those who are on the Consensus Building Group need to “take of their blinkers and consider options which do not see low income Aucklanders as an unlimited cash cow.”
