MEDIA ADVISORY
17 July 2013

Upper Waitaki Zone Committee meeting

The Upper Waitaki Zone Committee will meet for its regular monthly meeting in Twizel on Friday, 19 July.

The meeting will begin with a chance for members of the public to contribute, should they wish, and this will be followed by a discussion on integrating water quality monitoring in the zone.

A key focus for the committee is on developing water management solutions for water quality in the zone. At the meeting, the committee will have an initial discussion on the community feedback from its three meetings scheduled for 18 July in Omarama, Twizel, and Tekapo.

The meetings will update the community on the process the committee are leading to develop catchment-specific water quality limits in the zone, and ask for local input. Once developed, these will be reflected in the Upper Waitaki sub-regional section of the proposed Land & Water Regional Plan (pLWRP).

The proposed LWRP provides the framework to facilitate delivery of the community’s aspirations for water management – as set out in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).

At Friday’s meeting the committee will also review Environment Canterbury’s Land Use and Water Quality (LUWQ) and biodiversity project schedule for year two.

In year one work focussed on establishing Audited Self Management programmes and catchment groups, and progressing braided river, wetland, and intermontane stream protection and enhancement projects.

In year two work will focus on developing more catchment groups and ensuring that actions are realised on the ground. Work with catchment groups is also proposed on developing an accord for the winter grazing of cattle.

The Upper Waitaki Zone Committee operates as a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and the Waitaki and Mackenzie District councils. Zone committee meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.
