Old Waimakariri Bridge to re-open early

Old Waimakariri Bridge to re-open early

The Old Waimakariri Bridge will be re-opening to traffic earlier that scheduled following the completion of earthquake repair work.

The temporary closure had scheduled the bridge to reopen at 6pm on Sunday 21 July, but contractors will now finish the repairs 36 hours ahead of schedule, enabling the bridge to be reopened at 6am on Saturday 20 July.

Unit Manager of City and Environment John Mackie says, “The dry weather conditions this week have allowed the repair work to progress quicker than expected, so we can now open the bridge open earlier than anticipated.

“Reopening in time for the weekend will hopefully be good news for all motorists using the route and allow journey time’s return to normal.”

These repairs undertaken by contractors were a joint project between the Christchurch City Council and the Waimakariri District Council.
