Neighbourhood Week brings Christchurch together

Monday 22 July 2013

Neighbourhood Week brings your little corner of Christchurch together

Applications for funding subsidies for Neighbourhood Week open on Friday 29 July, allowing Christchurch communities to hold their own events and get-togethers with assistance from Christchurch City Council.

Neighbourhood Week 2013 runs from Friday 25 October to Sunday 3 November.

“Neighbourhood Week is an annual event with the aim of getting neighbours talking to each other and forging a little community spirit,” says Community Services Unit Manager Carolyn Gallagher. “Each year, our Community Boards set aside a fund for individuals and groups with great ideas to put together a great event. In the past, we’ve had barbecues, street parties, working bees, tree-planting days, kite-flying and community walks. If it brings your little corner of Christchurch together, then your Community Board wants to hear from you.”

Applications for funding close on Saturday 31 August.

Starting in 1998 as the brainchild of the Shirley–Papanui Community Board, Neighbourhood Week’s popularity has seen it spread from Canterbury to the rest of the country, where it is promoted by Neighbourhood Support.

The subsidy is a refund of expenses rather than a payout before the event runs. To apply for reimbursement of costs relating to your neighbourhood event, pick up an application form from the Council Civic Offices in Hereford Street, from one of the Council Service Centres or libraries or download the form from www.ccc.govt.nz/neighbourhoodweek
