ASEAN Ambassadors Visit Dunedin

ASEAN Ambassadors Visit Dunedin

Dunedin (Tuesday, 23 July 2013) – Dunedin businesses are showcasing their products to a wider audience this week.

A delegation from the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is in Dunedin on a three-day visit which finishes tomorrow.

The 10-member delegation includes ASEAN ambassadors, their spouses and officials. The delegates represent Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines and are based in New Zealand embassies.

Dunedin City Council Business Development Advisor Margo Reid says, “The visit is designed to promote a greater awareness of ASEAN, especially for business and trade opportunities.”

Prime Minister John Key launched the New Zealand-ASEAN Strategy on 12 July. This is being followed by roadshows and visits. For this ASEAN group, the Dunedin visit will be their main visit for the year.

The delegation is visiting a range of Dunedin companies over the three-day period - the New Zealand Honey Company, Fisher and Paykel, Natural History New Zealand, Silver Fern Farms and Scott Technology.

Other activities will include a visit to the University of Otago’s Centre for Innovation and meetings with Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull and the Southern Māori Business Network.

Tomorrow, the delegation will meet Dunedin’s Economic Development Strategy partners and be given a Strategy presentation.
