New Welcome Guide for Rotorua newcomers launched

Rotorua District Council’s (RDC) Settlement Support unit has launched an updated Welcome Guide to help newcomers settle into the community.

The new-and-improved guide for newcomers and migrants complements the recently revamped Volunteering Guide, produced by the council, Settlement Support and Citizens Advice Bureau.

RDC Settlement Support coordinator Heather McAllister said the new guide is more polished than previous editions and the information is easier to find.

“The guide is to help people who have recently arrived in Rotorua, to settle well in the community.

“It can be a challenge finding information when moving to a new area, so contained in this booklet is information on local education, getting around, local migrant groups, improving your English, obtaining work, Maori culture, and healthcare contacts.

“If locals meet newcomers at work or in the neighbourhood I’d encourage them to inform our visitors about Settlement Support and the Welcome Guide. It's a friendly gesture and a good way to break the ice.”

The ‘Finding a Place to Live’ section now includes tips when choosing property to rent or buy, information on rental contracts, and where to find checklists and guides for new homeowners and flatters. The ‘Things to Do in Rotorua’ chapter now includes a section on locals markets, activities for all ages, and how to meet other people.

The updated Welcome Guide is available from Rotorua District Council’s Customer Centre and Rotorua District Library. The online version can be viewed at www.rotoruanz.com/settlement.
