Pipeline Renewals for Andersons Bay
Pipeline Renewals for
Andersons Bay
Dunedin (Friday, 16 August 2013) – Major works will be taking place in parts of Andersons Bay in upcoming months as significant pipeline renewals occur.
Dunedin City Council Water and Wastewater Capital Delivery Team Leader Martin Hildreth says many of the water, wastewater and stormwater pipes in Andersons Bay are almost 100 years old and need to be replaced.
“These pipelines have generally performed well to date, but they’re beginning to show some classic signs of ageing.”
Pipeline renewals such as these in the wastewater and stormwater network reduce flooding, prevent overflows and minimise treatment costs.
Renewals work is carried out routinely each year, but this work is usually spread across the city, rather than being a package of work with the renewal of several different networks in one suburb at the same time.
Some urgent spot repairs have been carried out, but, following an area-wide pipeline inspection, a major, staged replacement programme is scheduled. The affected area is shown on the maps (attached) and includes roads such as Bayfield Road and a long section of Musselburgh Rise.
The work, estimated to cost $4 million, is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. Residents and other people who use the area should be aware there will be disruption to traffic at times.
Mr Hildreth says most of the pipes are under roads or on footpaths, but in some cases the pipelines pass through private properties. Those owners/occupiers will be contacted before any work begins and affected areas on the property will be reinstated.
The construction work will involve excavation, but, where possible, other methods which do not involve trenches will be used. The DCC is taking the opportunity not only to replace pipes, but in some cases to upgrade to larger pipes to address issues such as blockages, low flow and low pressure in some areas.
Tenders for the work will be advertised this month and let in September. Work is scheduled to begin in October and should be completed by the end of June 2014.
