Locals love their new aquatic centre

Kāpiti residents have been flocking to Coastlands Aquatic Centre. Last weekend more than 2200 people visited the new facility, which has been open for just a week.
Alison Law Aquatics Facilities Manager says 270 have joined swim classes and last night 44 people turned up for an evening aquafit class.
“People have clearly been waiting a long time for this facility and are already making it part of their lives. What’s particularly great is to see such a cross section of people coming, from families with young children, to the elderly.”
Ms Law says there have been lots of positive comments and people seem to understand the facility is still being finished; there are still workmen on site and some things to iron out.
“By opening as early as we possibly could we have had to accept that everything wouldn’t be perfect. For instance, we’re still adjusting chemical levels in the hydroslide, which means it hasn’t been running periodically, and some people have asked if the changing room floors could be made less slippery. We’re working on it and appreciate the feedback and people’s patience.”
Ms Law says some people have also found the pool hall too hot.
“Our windows are designed to open automatically when it gets too warm but work still needs to be done to provide that functionality. I can assure people that the windows will be working by summer. In addition there is an exhaust fan that will take out excess heat.”
Pool users are being encouraged to fill out suggestion forms so pool management can track and address recurring issues.
“This is a community facility and we encourage public feedback to allow us to tweak our programmes and make sure everybody is happy and catered for. It’s been a wonderful first week and the smiles on the faces of our visitors say it all.”
