Moore, Moore, Moore

5 September 2013: The Moore Wilson’s food emporium in Wellington is flourishing proof that there’s very good dosh to be made from quality nosh. If you sally forth any weekend morning to the company’s flagship store on the corner of Tory and College Streets (there are also MW outposts in Lower Hutt, Porirua and Masterton), you’ll find tons of Wellingtonians thronging the aisles.

It’s quite an eye-opener to be in the capital’s small but feisty CBD at that time: the city’s big population of affluent civil serpents is pressing into cafes for coffee or brunch and shopping like there’s no tomorrow. Recession? What recession? At Moore Wilson’s, upmarket Mummy and Daddy often have Jeremy and Jemima in tow but the shop attracts a wide demographic.

We have to say we’re impressed. Before we visited Moore Wilson’s we wondered what all the fuss was about. Now we know. The Tory Street store is unquestionably a premier food retailer and we wandered its aisles metaphorically open-mouthed. Moore Wilson’s literally has everything, from rows and rows of glistening fresh produce to bread, pastries, fish and seafood, all kinds of meat and game, deli counters, wine, beer and spirits, flowers, cookbooks and food magazines.

Want more? There’s a climate-controlled affinage room for storing cheeses and a recently added specialist section for bakers. Moore Wilson’s also runs culinary classes and workshops. In the car park, a demotically-named ‘Chook Wagon’ sells French-style rotisserie chickens. On Fridays it also offers Peking Duck. Cor!

Alimentary also likes Moore Wilson’s adjacent cash and carry operation, which for chefs, caterers and anyone wanting to stock up on reasonably-priced cookware, oven mitts, aprons, bulk dry goods and Lord knows what else, is a magnet. We bought several tea towels because you can never have too many, and just like the store itself, they are of very good quality. www.alimentary.co.nz
