City skate park to be extended

Christchurch’s biggest skate park is to be extended and will be opened by the end of the year.

Work on $3 million of improvements to Washington Way Skate Park, on Moorhouse Avenue, will start soon.

Improvements will include extensions and improvements to the south and north of the existing site that will cater to all skill levels of skateboaders, BMX riders and in-line skaters. More landscaping, plantings and car parking improvements will also be included in the work.

Christchurch City Council Environment and Infrastructure Committee Chair Claudia Reid says this is great news for the community.

“The Washington Way Skate Park is already well-used and the planned extension will create a bigger, better facility for everyone to enjoy. While the project was held-up following the earthquakes, it is wonderful that work is starting now and I’m looking forward to seeing the final result.

“Once finished, the upgrade will realise the hopes of skate park users for it to become one of the best skate parks in the country.”

The Council approved the awarding of the tender for the work to Hunter Construction Ltd last week. Sections of the existing skate park will need to be closed while construction is underway to ensure work can be completed as quickly as possible.

The upgrade has been planned since 2009, however the earthquakes and a longer-than-expected resource consent process created delays. The original budget has also had to be increased from $1.2 million due to a number of factors including:

• Construction industry cost escalations since initial planning on the concept design in 2009

• Additional cost of a lengthy resource consent process

• Additional earthquake strengthening required post-earthquakes

• Post-earthquake requirement to anchor the bowl below the water table

• Increased car parking requirements

• A new landscaping plan

• Limited competition for tenders due to complex nature of the work

• Requirement to fence along the railway line and nearby business.
