Scott Pothan Director WAM; Farewell Dinner KF 2011

Whangarei Art Museum Director - Only NZ Curator Invitee: the Korea Foundation 15th Workshop for Overseas Korean And Asian Art Curators.

WAM director Scott Pothan has again been selected from major museums and art galleries throughout the world to attend the 15th Curators Workshop hosted by the Korea Foundation in Seoul 6-16 November 2013. Te Papa National Services Te Paerangi is assisting with a professional development travel grant to WAM Director Scott Pothan.

The theme this year is modern and contemporary art and architecture in Korea and its context to Chinese and Japanese art of the era. Conference lectures and field trips include Seoul, Incheon and Kyeonggi Province, hosted and fully funded by the Korea Foundation, one of the most progressive and magnanimous cultural foundations in the world of arts and heritage internationally.

Participating curators this year will again include the British Museum, The Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, the Art Gallery of NSW, and The Powerhouse Museum, Sydney,

and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, as well as well as 36 other museum curators from North and South America, Europe and Russia, and The Asia Pacific region.

The art museum has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the Korea Foundation since 2000 engaging with Asian and Korean communities in Northland.

Next year the art museum is curating an exhibition tracing the creative history of Chinese, Korean and Japanese artists in New Zealand’s art history from the mid-20th Century to today.
