Sue and Ray Cox first couple in 37 years to win Civic Honours
Sue and Ray Cox tonight became the first couple ever to take home a Civic Honour Award for their dedication to Community Service.
Sue has dedicated herself to the Belmont and Lower Hutt community for the past 40 years - supporting Scouts, Belmont Play Centre, Belmont Anglican Church and the Hill Road Belmont Progressive Organisation.
During this time she has also been an active Rotarian with the Western Hutt and Hutt Valley Rotary.
Mayor Ray Wallace said, “Sue has put her skills as a florist towards improving the Hutt City environment, supervising special needs adults in cleaning up the river and foreshore and planting trees at Hikoikoi Reserve.
“It is this personal commitment to caring for the needs of others that makes Sue a well-deserved Civic Honour recipient tonight.”
Roy Cox received his Civic Honour Award for his contribution to the community and determination to make our city a better place.
As the first coordinator of the Jackson Street Programme he rallied the Jackson Street community to reduce crime and set out to revitalise Jackson Street, which saw it receive a Class 2 classification by the Heritage Places Trust.
He has been the unpaid manager of The Petone Trust, provided work experience and life skills for more than 700 young people and been a Rotarian in the Hutt Valley for 35 years.
A Belmont stalwart for 40 years, Roy has been active in church life and instigated the renovation of the Belmont Anglican Church.
“Roy Cox is the embodiment of selfless dedication to the community and a true leader of Hutt City,” said Mayor Wallace.
The Hutt City Civic Awards have been given every year since 1976. Never before has a husband and wife won Civic Awards on the same night.
Susan Hare was also honours with a Civic Award for 25 years of service to Hutt Valley Netball.
Other Civic Award winners included Kirsten Garcia and Metaio Malama who each won a Youth Services Award for their outstanding voluntary service.
