Exhibitions to highlight Auckland’s heritage
Two exhibitions will showcase very different aspects of Auckland’s built heritage as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival (Sept 28-Oct 13).
The exhibitions will take place at two heritage buildings cared for by the NZ Historic Places Trust – Highwic in Newmarket, and Alberton in Mt Albert.
The first exhibition in the series will be Time Travel in Newmarket featuring images by Sonjia Gardien that illustrate the changes that have taken place in Newmarket over the years.
“We are delighted to be able to support an exhibition of Sonjia’s artwork in the Highwic Billiard House,” says the Manager of Highwic, Cheryl Laurie.
“Sonjia uses old images of Newmarket transposed to a modern context illustrating the changes that have taken place over the time. The result is a dynamic blend of old and new, which tracks the changes in Newmarket’s urban landscape in a way that’s really fascinating.”
Time Travel in Newmarket takes place at Highwic’s Billiard House on September 28th, 29th and October 2nd (10.30am-4.30pm). Admission to the exhibition is free.
Meanwhile at Alberton, an exhibition with a difference will run from October 5-13 (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).
“Alberton commemorates its 150th anniversary this year, and as part of the celebrations we are organising an exhibition of old and new photographs, paintings and other artwork featuring the building itself,” says the Manager of Alberton, Rendell McIntosh.
“Alberton is one of those iconic heritage buildings that has featured in all sorts of media over the years – from formal photography, through to original artwork and even popular culture, and our exhibition will celebrate that diversity.
“We’ve got some wonderful images ready for display, though we’d love to hear from anyone who might have an image of Alberton they would be prepared to lend to us for use in our exhibition and would appreciate people contacting us by September 30 if possible.”
Admission to the exhibition will be $10pp; NZHPT members and children free.
Live action at
Highwic
Highwic will run a series of live activities for kids during the school holidays as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival.
Three Parlour Parties will provide good Victorian fun for youngsters bored with computer games, movies and other distractions.
“Kids will be able to enjoy playing a range of games that would have been played by children over a century ago – games like Blind Man’s Buff, blow out the candle, musical cushions and more,” says the Manager of Highwic, Cheryl Laurie.
“We’ll also have other games that have proven to be real favourites in the past including quoits, croquet and a treasure trail.”
The Parlour Parties take place on October 2 and 9, 10am-12 noon; and October 3, 1-3pm. Admission $8 per adult, accompanied children free.
Coal on the Range – live demonstrations of Highwic’s coal range - will also take place on October 3 and 10, at 11-4pm. Admission $8 per adult; children and NZHPT members free.
